Excitement in France – vortex over kart racing in prison near Paris

Date:

A go-kart race in the courtyard of a prison near Paris, in which inmates race against guards, caused a stir in France. “Our prisons are not holiday colonies where prisoners and guards make friends,” said Républicains MP Éric Ciotti.

Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti spoke of “shocking images from Fresnes prison” and ordered an investigation. “Where is the respect for the victims and their families when they see the perpetrators having fun while serving their sentence,” the right-wing politician tweeted after releasing a video last Friday about the summer party in prison.

Summer party approved at the highest level
Besides karting there were other activities. “Reintegration is important in the fight against recidivism, but karting is certainly not!” the minister muttered on Twitter (see tweet below).
As the newspaper “Le Figaro” reported on Monday, the ministry had pre-approved the summer festival for detainees with light sentences at the highest level – initially, however, there was only talk of sports competitions and not a kart race, which, incidentally, the guards decided for themselves.

Director thrown into the pool
According to “Le Figaro”, prison staff said that not everything was ideally organized, not even from a security point of view. In addition, a prison director, who did not participate in the competition in the courtyard, was thrown into a swimming pool by inmates.

While France is still debating kart racing in the midst of the summer malaise, the prison follows in September: a rap album recorded there, which was made during the “Shtar Academy” project, is to be released.
