Corona: Regular vaccination remains necessary

Date:

An end to regular vaccinations to protect against the coronavirus is not in sight in the near future. At least that’s what a large-scale network study by the US National Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggests. Protection against Covid-19 disease with subsequent hospitalization continues to decline after vaccination, so refresher courses are still needed.

The new analysis made clear that the vaccination protects against hospitalization, but also that the protective effect diminishes over time. These findings come from a CDC network of 261 clinics and 272 emergency departments across the United States.

Loss of protective effect after a few months
“The results confirm the low efficacy of primary vaccination with the two US-approved mRNA vaccines from Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna. Protection against hospitalization was only 73 percent in the first two months after the second dose (vs. 96 percent in the delta wave). The weak protective effect of basic vaccinations continues to diminish over time: after six to eight months, the protective effect against hospitalization was only 48 percent and after more than 14 months it was only 19 percent,” Deutsches Ärzteblatt said in a report on Tuesday.

The third partial vaccination increased the protective effect against hospitalization for Covid-19 in the US to 89 percent in the first two months. After four to six months, the effect was only 66 percent, after more than eight months it was 31 percent.

need further vaccination
The “fourth sting” initially increased the protection rate against hospitalizations to 72 percent for people between the ages of 45 and 64. For those over 65, it rose to 72 percent in the first two months. After two to four months, it was 70 percent. After that, the effect dropped again, albeit at a high level. This underlines the need for further vaccinations, the Deutsches Ärzteblatt reports.

Especially people with weak immune systems – for example due to therapies for other diseases (cancer, rheumatic diseases) – did poorly. After three partial vaccinations and more than half a year, the protection rate (no hospitalization due to Covid-19) was only 29 percent. After a fourth dose, it was back to 48 percent.
