A fatal chain reaction after a faulty energy transmission caused a power outage in large parts of Bangladesh on Tuesday. About 140 million people had to wait in the dark for a total of seven hours. It is not yet entirely clear what caused the error.
While many businesses and shops in the capital Dhaka and other major cities had to close earlier, gas stations were stormed. Everyone wanted to buy supplies for their diesel generators. Incidents were not reported.
The South Asian country has also been tried and tested when it comes to one-hour power outages, albeit to a lesser extent so far. Lately, however, defaults have increased, mainly due to the war in Ukraine and the turmoil in energy markets. In this regard, a representative of the textile industry warned that the country’s energy supply problems also threaten the country’s economy.
Bangladesh earns about 80 percent of its foreign exchange reserves through textile exports. Next to China, the country is one of the largest textile exporters in the world.
