A middle-aged woman from Northern Ireland is now being paid the equivalent of €5,000 after being asked her age during an interview. Janice Walsh had applied for a job as a pizza delivery boy in Northern Ireland.
During the interview, the person in charge asked her about her age. After Walsh answered her, she raised her eyebrow and said, “You don’t look good.” When the applicant received a rejection shortly afterwards, it was immediately clear to her: she was not accepted because of her age and gender. She immediately opened Facebook and contacted the store to complain about the “discrimination.”
The answer was not long in coming: they apologized and explained that they did not know it was inappropriate to ask about their age in an interview. However, the position is really only suitable for younger people between the ages of 18 and 30.

That wasn’t enough for Walsh. “I’ve only seen men as drivers and I think I was overlooked for a driver position because I’m a woman,” she said, accusing the delivery service of discriminating against her based on her gender. The woman filed a discrimination case against the branch. The owner has since apologized to Walsh and paid her £4,250 (€5,000) in compensation.
