One third are minors and three in four adults are women.
Almost six months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Germany is now officially hosting nearly a million refugees from the occupied country. Only Poland, a direct neighbor of Ukraine, exceeds that figure within the European Union with more than 1.3 million people fleeing the war conflict on its territory. The Interior Ministry reported on Tuesday that Germany has so far officially registered 967,546 Ukrainians as refugees, although the number could be higher as many have not reported to authorities. Despite the registration, it is not known how many of the nearly one million refugees are still on German soil or have traveled to other EU countries. For its part, the federal police pointed out that an average of 700 new refugees arrive from Ukraine every day.
A third of those registered so far, exactly 351,061, are children or adolescents, almost all of school age, of whom 154,761 are enrolled in primary and secondary schools across the country. In addition, the report from the German Interior Ministry highlights that 97% of refugees are of Ukrainian nationality and three quarters of them are women. Since martial law is in effect in the invaded country, men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to travel abroad. More than 6.6 million people have left Ukraine since the invasion began in late February, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The German Interior Minister, the Social Democrat Nancy Faeser, emphasized in Berlin that this is the largest influx of refugees on the old continent since the Second World War. “I am very proud of our country’s humanity and willingness to help,” said the minister, highlighting the expansion of integration courses and job offers for refugees from Ukraine. “Many in our society grew up helping the runaways. It is a humanitarian effort that shows great solidarity with Ukraine,” Faeser said.
