It should have gone around that a baby doesn’t stop crying when you shake it. The fact that it can be seriously damaged when shaken is also important. And yet another “annoyed” father was in court, because that’s exactly what happened – this time in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg). He not only violently shook his three-month-old son, but also grabbed him by the neck – and even strangled him with a chain, the indictment said.
Severe shaking trauma
While the first act went undetected, the second incident in November last year was so serious that the four-month-old baby was knocked unconscious. The father made an emergency call, the doctors were stunned – and confirmed a trembling trauma including cerebral hemorrhage, epidermal disorder, hemorrhage under the retina and a hygroma – a cyst filled with fluid. Only then did the 28-year-old bartender confess to the misdeeds!
“I panicked”
He wouldn’t talk at first – defended by Stefan Harg – but then said: “It was such an excessive crying of the baby. I panicked and didn’t know what to do.” Again, never shake a baby!
Doctor talks about late effects
Judge Silke Sandholzer, a social worker who cares for the family, drives into the parade, claiming there will be no long-term effects: “Are you a doctor?” She isn’t, and doctors report motor weaknesses and “difficulty sitting” in the now one-year-old, who is initially cared for by Grandma. Mom was at work when it happened.
The mild verdict: six months probation, 5000 euros for the child. The health insurer wants 41,212 euros in treatment costs.
