As in “Breaking Bad” – doctor is said to have made crystal meth at home

Date:

A case reminiscent of the popular “Breaking Bad” series, a Styrian doctor and researcher was on trial Tuesday for allegedly producing methamphetamine. “There was a room in our apartment that I wasn’t allowed in. He locked himself there for days,” his ex-girlfriend testified in court. The trial was adjourned.

In a smart suit and leather shoes, the accused doctor will face a judge in the Graz Regional Criminal Court on Tuesday. He remains silent, although – or precisely because – the accusations weigh heavily. The prosecutor accuses the 40-year-old of “unauthorized use of narcotics”. He is said to have produced the dangerous drug at home. A search of the house found a number of chemicals that indicate this.

“He Didn’t Do Drugs”
The doctor lived not only in the apartment, but with his ex-girlfriend. The blond young doctor with a designer bag testifies as a witness. “He doesn’t do drugs and he doesn’t have any friends who do,” she explains. “When we were together, he certainly didn’t.” The relationship ended in 2019.

But: “The office was his space. I haven’t had access to that, especially in the past two years.” – “Do you think that’s normal?” the judge wants to know. “No, that’s definitely not normal.”

“When he came out, he looked sick”
The doctor, who used to work in basic biochemical research, sometimes locked himself in this office for “more than two days,” his ex-girlfriend says. “He didn’t eat or sleep there. When he came out, he often looked terminally ill.” She didn’t see any lab supplies there, but apparently there were some tools in the basement. The suspect is silent and shakes his head.

Chemist found traces of meth
A chemist from the Federal Criminal Police Office appeared in court as a second witness. “The chemicals found can easily be used to make methamphetamine. We see that again and again,” explains the man. He found traces of the meth and byproducts in solutions. “Obviously there must have been a reaction.”

The trial ultimately revolves around detailed chemical questions, until the judge decides to call in a pharmaceutical expert. adjourned.
