Depression and Anxiety – Every third Ukrainian refugee suffers mentally

Date:

A third of Ukrainian refugees in and outside the country have psychological problems, aid organization CARE reported Tuesday. These include depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition to CARE, the Austrian Red Cross is there to help millions of people.

“The suffering and magnitude of the destruction in Ukraine is immeasurable: more than six million people had to flee Ukraine and lost everything. The number of internally displaced persons also exceeds the six million mark,” said Geraldario, president of the Austrian Red Cross. According to its own statement, the aid organization operates in Ukraine with three teams, supporting displaced persons, host families and particularly vulnerable people with relief supplies, money and vouchers, housing and medical care.

15 million dependent on humanitarian aid
15 million people in Ukraine depend on humanitarian aid. Some of them, including many women and children, were traumatized by the war, according to aid organization CARE. Every third refugee suffers from depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. They are supported in the country of war itself, but also through partner organizations in neighboring countries such as Poland and Romania.

challenge winter
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian health care system is under heavy pressure. The Austrian Red Cross is therefore contributing to rebuilding a functioning long-term supply system. Winter will be a “huge challenge,” Creator said. The civilian population urgently needs well-insulated housing, heating equipment and financial aid to be able to bear the heating costs.

The infrastructure in the east of the country in particular (including Donbass and Luhansk) is currently heavily damaged. The war started on February 24 and lasted almost half a year.
