Earthquake-prone Japan wants to connect more nuclear power plants to the grid in the future. As Japanese media reported on Wednesday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s government not only wants to extend the life of nuclear power plants to more than 60 years, but is even considering developing and building next-generation nuclear reactors. This would be a departure from Japan’s previous policy of not building additional nuclear power plants.
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 caused by a massive earthquake and massive tsunami, Japan introduced stricter safety standards that generally limited the operation of reactors to 40 years. However, if safety is improved, it is possible to continue working for another 20 years. So far, 17 nuclear power plants have met the stricter safety requirements.
Prime Minister Kishida recently stated that Japan will have up to nine nuclear reactors in operation this winter. The others will also be connected to the network from next year, Japanese media report. The number three in the world economy has set itself the goal of getting 20 to 22 percent of its electricity supply from nuclear energy by fiscal year 2030.
