Therapy still needed – coma patient wakes up after accident at Marmolada

Date:

A Trentino mountaineer who has been hospitalized since the Marmolada Glacier accident has awakened from a coma. But he had to undergo further therapy, his sister Valeria reports on Facebook.

“Davide (Carnielli, ed.) is in a phase of awakening. A long road of recovery awaits him, accompanied by the love of his family,” wrote the Italian, thanking rescuers, the President of the Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, and the President of the Region of Veneto, Luca Zaia.

Missing after July 3rd
30-year-old mountaineer Davide Carnielli was initially missing after the July 3 accident and was found by his family at Treviso Hospital. He got there in serious condition and without identification. As reported, a large sheet of ice on Mount Marmolada had collapsed and hit ascending routes to the summit. Eleven people were killed, including six men and three women from Italy and two climbers from the Czech Republic.

Eight other people were injured in the glacier collapse. The man, who has now come out of his coma, will have to undergo further therapy before he is allowed to leave the hospital. Experts suspect that the high temperatures and insufficient rainfall are the cause of the loosened ice cap.
