Armistice broken – Ethiopia: New fighting in Tigray conflict conflict zone

Date:

Fighting has resumed in the northern Ethiopian crisis region of Tigray after several months of ceasefire, according to the warring parties. According to eyewitness accounts, shots from heavy artillery had been heard around the town of Kobo since morning.

Two residents told Reuters news agency that there had been major troop movements in the area in the past two days. The government news agency said the TPLF had attacked the Eastern Front early in the morning, breaking the ceasefire.

The TPLF military command, on the other hand, accused the government of violating the ceasefire. Tigrai Television TV station reported that Ethiopian troops, along with special forces and militias from the neighboring region of Amhara, launched a “large-scale attack” early in the morning.

Hope for peace talks fades
In November 2020, war broke out in Tigray, which also spread to neighboring regions. A mutually respected ceasefire has been in place since March, raising hopes that peace talks can begin between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and the TPLF. The fighting in Africa’s second most populous country has displaced millions of people and killed thousands of civilians. Parts of Tigray have gone into starvation.
