Harvest is postponed – Why we are threatened with an autumn without hot chestnuts this year

Date:

What would autumn be without hot chestnuts and chestnuts? This year there will certainly be less of the healthy delicacy. And it is also becoming increasingly expensive, say two wholesalers from Burgenland who import the fruit from all over the world and deliver it to customers throughout Austria.

For almost ten years, 49-year-old Daniela Kovar-Thier from Marz and her sister Petra have been running a thriving business specializing in the wholesale of chestnuts and chestnuts. It was founded in 1945 by her grandparents, who ran a Christmas tree, fruit and vegetable shop on Vienna’s Naschmarkt. “Usually by mid-October almost the entire chestnut and chestnut crop has been harvested.” Not this year.
