Shock for owner – Too much bare skin: Advertising council bans poster

Date:

Janin Baumann advertised her wig business in Carinthia with a large and provocative motif and wanted to use this to raise awareness about the disease ‘alopecia’. She succeeded in the latter almost too well and also led to negative reactions.

In mid-January, the Advertising Council received an official complaint against this “terrible advertising” (we reported) and has now made a decision. “Now the result of the Advertising Council has been received and it was negative for me!”, writes Janin Baumann, the owner of the wig shop in Klagenfurt.

Violation of the code of ethics
“My first reaction… my jaw dropped!” During its investigation, the Advertising Council found a violation of the Code of Ethics. “The advertising councils justify their decision by saying that the subject matter in question uses a sexualized image without a direct connection to the content of the product being advertised,” the statement said. “A degradation of the female gender is recognizable through an animal image of a naked woman with a wig as ‘prey’ in her mouth.”

Signaling effect of the campaign
The Advertising Council positively emphasizes the signaling effect of the campaign surrounding the disease. “Many advertising boards emphasize the importance of the subject’s message: feeling comfortable and beautiful even without hair. However, according to the Advertising Council, this message cannot be recognized when viewing the current poster,” the Advertising Council continues.

“The efforts and educational work of the director were in any case positively appreciated.” Janin Baumann will not appeal: “He brought the poster with his complaint to such attention that without the poster it would never have happened. The subject of alopecia was on everyone’s lips.”
