Attack on train station – EU: responsibility for “Russian missile terror”

Date:

Even six months after the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, the events in Ukraine leave no one indifferent. An attack on a train station in the Ukrainian city of Tschaplyne, which killed 25, has raised further concerns for the EU. Those responsible would be “held accountable,” EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell made clear.

The train station in Chaplyne in the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk was attacked on Wednesday evening. The death toll rose to 25 on Thursday, including two children, according to the Ukrainian railway company.

Borrell: “Peace Attack”
EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell spoke on Twitter of a “disgusting attack by Russia on civilians”. “Those responsible for Russia’s missile terror will be held accountable,” he said.

Russia said Thursday the attack was aimed at a military train. An Iskander missile “directly hit” the train, killing “more than 200 reservists from the Ukrainian armed forces” and destroying equipment, Russia’s defense ministry said. The train was “on its way to the battlefields” in eastern Ukraine.

Bombs on Independence Day
The attack came exactly six months after the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on Wednesday. Since the date coincided with Ukraine’s Independence Day, there were fears of increasing Russian attacks.

Ukrainian deputy interior minister Evhen Enin said the number of Russian bombing raids on cities and towns in Ukraine actually increased on Wednesday. “In the last 24 hours, the police have recorded 58 attacks, far more than we normally see,” Enin explained to Telegram.

189 bomb threats in one day
According to local media reports, nine regions of Ukraine were bombed on Wednesday. A total of 189 alarms were raised across the country, a record since the start of the war on February 24.

The United States pledged $3 billion in military aid to Ukraine on Independence Day. The package is intended to defend Ukraine and modernize its military. US President Joe Biden wanted to discuss details in a telephone conversation with Zelenskyj on Thursday. For Ukraine, it is the 183rd day of the war.

Russia expands its armed forces
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, signed a decree increasing the number of armed forces from 1.9 to 2.04 million, according to a report by the RIA news agency. The decision will come into effect on January 1.
