A judge orders the retraction of a video of Bolsonaro in which he feeds the theory of electoral fraud

Date:

The prosecution has opened an investigation to find out whether the president committed a crime by questioning the vote counting system in front of a foreign representation

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) judge Mauro Campbell on Wednesday ordered that the video of President Jair Bolsonaro’s meeting with several ambassadors be removed from public television, in which he made baseless allegations about the reliability of the system electorally.

The TSE has ruled that TV Brasil has removed from all its platforms the footage of that July 18 meeting at the Alvorada Palace, in which Bolsonaro once again tried to sow doubts about the electronic ballot boxes, this time under a large representation of foreign diplomats.

Judge Campbell’s ruling, in response to a petition filed by the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), states that “the material circulated on social networks because of the proximity of the election” could be considered an “abuse” to gain votes. to win .

She, for her part, points out that there is a “clear” and “irreversible” risk not only to the plaintiff, in this case the PDT, but also to the Electoral Justice itself, “as a result of the dissemination of false information” , which “has already been vehemently refuted” by the TSE, Campbell explained.

The judge has warned that Bolsonaro, “far from taking a cooperative stance on improving the electoral system,” is “deliberately” insisting on manifesting “falseities” about the electoral system and vote counting.

Going further, Campbell has warned that the Brazilian president’s speech “appears to constitute an abuse in the exercise of freedom of expression, knowing that there is no absolute fundamental right in Brazil”.

Parallel to this decision, the Public Prosecution Service informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday about the opening of a preliminary investigation into the possible commission of a crime by Bolsonaro that day.

In all, a dozen ambassadors attended that meeting, as well as between 65 and 80 people belonging to different diplomatic corps. The staff present, to which the newspaper ‘O Globo’ had access, emphasized that allegations were made during the meeting without providing evidence, even without concern for the health of the Brazilian democracy.
