MEPs said the chronic labor shortage in the food and agricultural sectors could drive up food prices. A report from the Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, compiled by six governors and four Labor MPs along with a colleague from the SNP, says the sector had “more than 500,000 potential jobs” in August last year.
He found evidence of stress and shortages before the start of the war in Ukraine, which caused “greater pressure” on the industry. The study authors wrote: “The evidence we have obtained leaves no doubt about the seriousness of the problems affecting the food and agriculture sector due to lack of employment.”
This includes food safety, animal care, and the mental health of those working in the industry. On the contrary, the government did not show a deep understanding of these issues and sometimes tried to transfer responsibility to the sector on the basis of incorrect information about its immigration system.
“The government needs to fundamentally change its stance and work with the industry to find solutions that help solve the problems it is facing quickly, in the short, medium and long term, to help the UK food industry thrive. Otherwise, there is a risk of the sector shrinking and food inflation increasing at the expense of The competitiveness of the UK, making the country more dependent on food imports while we export our food production capacity – as well as the jobs we support – abroad.
