A ton of crystal meth discovered in Australia hidden in marble

Date:

After several hundred kilos of methamphetamine were found in Australia, more than a ton of the drug has now been discovered. As before, the intoxicant, also known as crystal meth or “ice”, was hidden in marble slabs, the Border Guard and New South Wales State Police said Friday.

In total, more than 1.8 tons of the synthetic drug with a street value of more than 1.6 billion Australian dollars (the equivalent of about 1.1 billion euros) was seized. It was the “largest seizure of methamphetamine on the Australian border and a major blow to organized crime,” the report said.

Drugs found in ocean freight containers
Nearly 750 kilograms of methamphetamine had previously been found in ocean freight containers that had arrived from the United Arab Emirates in July at Port Botany, southeast of Sydney. Three men have been arrested and charged in this regard, the border guard said in a statement.

Police suspect international drug syndicate
As part of further investigation, other containers that had arrived in Australia last week were then searched. The police assume an internationally networked drug syndicate, it said. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests are possible.
