At least four people were killed in an airstrike on the city of Mekele in Ethiopia on Friday. Among them are two children. Nine other people were injured. After five months of relative calm, fighting between government forces and rebels in the north of the country flared up again on Wednesday.
An Ethiopian Air Force plane dropped bombs on a residential area and kindergarten on Friday, a spokesman for the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said. At least four people were killed. Nine other people were injured, the head of a hospital in the regional capital said.
government denied attack
The Ethiopian government has already denied the attack. They only attack military targets, the rebels would only fake civilian deaths. Fighting between government forces and rebels had flared up again on Wednesday, after five months of relative calm, as reported. The parties to the conflict hold each other responsible for this. The armed conflict in Ethiopia had already begun in November 2020 with an offensive by the country’s armed forces after the ruling TPLF repeatedly questioned the authority of the central government.
It was only in March that the two sides agreed to a ceasefire after a year and a half, primarily to bring urgently needed humanitarian aid to the region. This is cut off from the rest of the country and according to the UN, half of it is already starving.
Thousands dead so far
Thousands of people have died and more than two million others have been displaced since the fighting began, according to the United Nations. The UN accuses all parties to the conflict of grave human rights violations. Numerous countries and international organizations have now called for an end to hostilities, including the UN and the US. A peaceful solution is called for, but hopes for a peace talk are fading.
