Moscow plans to station nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus. From the point of view of EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, Europe is in danger – because Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin is escalating the situation without achieving anything. Moreover, tensions are currently running particularly high due to Finland’s accession to NATO.
Borrell warned in Brussels on Tuesday that Putin’s latest nuclear poker game poses a direct threat to European security. Just over a week ago, the EU foreign policy official had already assured on Twitter: “The EU is ready to respond with further sanctions.”
Putin wants to station nuclear weapons in Belarus
The Russian head of state had announced that it would station tactical nuclear weapons in the neighboring ex-Soviet Republic of Belarus because of the high tensions with the West resulting from the war in Ukraine. He justified this by saying that the US had been doing something similar in Europe for years.
Moscow’s ambassador to Minsk, Boris Gryzlov, announced on Sunday that weapons should be deployed at the border with Poland. The bunkers required for the storage of the weapons must therefore be ready on 1 July. “This will happen despite the noise in Europe and the US,” Gryzlov, a former Russian interior minister and chairman of the State Duma, said, according to the Belta agency.
Finland’s accession to NATO is a thorn in Russia’s side
Against the background of the generally tense situation, Russia is now particularly angry about Finland’s inclusion in the world’s largest military alliance. According to the Russian state news agency “RIA Novosti”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that NATO expansion forced Moscow to take countermeasures.
Moscow will therefore follow closely what happens in Helsinki after accession and take steps accordingly. In addition, the diplomat stressed that joining would certainly affect bilateral relations – because the North Atlantic Alliance is a “hostile structure” to Russia.
The eternal lyre of Moscow
Moscow repeatedly emphasizes that NATO is de facto at war with Russia and tries to justify the war with flimsy arguments. “Their secret services work against us around the clock, while their weapons, as Putin said in a recent interview, are shipped to Ukraine for free to shoot at our army,” for example, is one of Peskov’s absurd arguments.
