After the search of Donald Trump’s property, a lawsuit has revealed new details. Because the former US president kept secret documents in his home, he may have broken the law. The document was partially released on Friday.
Behind this is the US Department of Justice, which responded three weeks ago to a judge’s order authorizing a search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach. The published document is more than 30 pages long, about half of which has been redacted to protect sensitive information.
National Defense Documents
Among other things, there is information about the Federal Police FBI’s initial suspicion against the 76-year-old. Accordingly, 14 of the 15 boxes of documents Trump had already sent from his estate to the National Archives contained confidential and sometimes top secret documents. In total, 184 documents were classified as at least confidential and apparently also contain information about national defense. The FBI assumed that there were other classified documents on the property as the documents in question contained other papers. In addition, there were handwritten notes on some of the documents, probably by Trump himself.
During the search, the agents eventually found a set of “Top Secret/SCI” documents that can only be viewed in special government facilities. By keeping it in his private estate, Trump may have broken the law. This allegation is currently under investigation.
Trump suspects political reasons
The former US president suspected political reasons, for example because he could again participate in the presidential elections, and defended himself with a lawsuit. All documents have been released, he said. This requires a formal process in the US, sometimes requiring further approvals. The document published Friday contains associated footnotes.
The property in Mar-a-Lago was searched on August 8, causing a stir. For investigators to search the home of a former president is considered unprecedented in American history. The same applies to the publication of essential procedural documents.
