Reumannplatz in Vienna – rebuilt with eight million euros: target missed

Date:

Residents of the Reumannplatz in Vienna are desperate, barely sleeping. The “Krone” was there.

Only recently was the “Krone” at Keplerplatz due to the unacceptable conditions. But Reumannplatz is no better, residents now report.

Actually, the redesign should have defused the problem area, but the opposite is the case. “It is almost unbearable, because of the noise I often only sleep an hour at night,” says one resident. The riot starts at 1 p.m. Groups of up to 20 people hung out in the park until the wee hours of the morning, listening to loud music. “We have a baby who needs to sleep, even in the summer I have to keep the windows closed,” said Zuzana Buckova.

More police and alcohol ban demanded
The concerned residents call the police several times a week, but they too are unable to control the rioters. “We need a lot more police and an alcohol ban here,” residents ask. In addition to the noise, there is also garbage and stench. As there is not a single public toilet on the entire Reumannplatz, the pay phone is used as an illegal toilet. Apparently that was not possible with a budget of eight million euros.

And what have the video cameras actually brought? According to the police, there has been a noticeable improvement in the Reumannplatz district. The crimes have decreased. The neighbors see it differently. “It has only gotten worse since the renovation. I know women who no longer go through the park alone at night,” says Mirko Bozovic. It seems that the multi-million dollar renovation has not had the desired effect…
