After a teenager was shot and killed by police officers in St. Johann in Tirol on Friday, the investigation is now being conducted by officials from Carinthia. The first suspicion: serious bodily harm. The service weapons of both police officers have been seized, but they are still on duty. They had followed a group of youths (aged 13 and 14) who had fled in a stolen van on Friday morning – see video report above.
After the police operation in St. Johann in Tirol, in which – as reported – a 14-year-old Austrian was shot dead, the investigation has been started. Officials from Carinthia confiscated their colleagues’ service weapons, as well as the stolen minibus in which the gang ran away and were shot nine times.
Clarifies whether shots were justified
According to Hansjörg Mayr, four of the boys – two 13-year-old Austrians exited the car before fleeing – a Russian (13) and the second 14-year-old who was in the van had already been questioned by the Innsbruck prosecutor. The gunshot victim will soon follow. “The main topic of the investigation is whether the shooting was justified,” Mayr explained.
The first suspicion is serious bodily harm. Both officers who fired are being investigated. Police confirmed they are still on duty – their weapons have been replaced.
LKA and OM are initially silent
Whether it’s customary to shoot at a stationary car, neither Mayr nor LKA boss Katja Tersch wanted to answer “Krone’s” question. In general, both were very silent about the circumstances of the incident. Why didn’t a roadblock work? Why did the officers take up arms? How many times have you hit the car? All this must first be clarified by the investigation.
What the 13- and 14-year-old teens did in a stolen van at 5 a.m. is something only they can answer. What is certain is that some of the minors are already known to the police – of assault, coercion and burglary.
