On Saturday, a stable in the Styrian town of Passail caught fire. Some animals could be saved, but for about 20 chicks all help came too late.
At around 1 p.m. on Saturday, heavy smoke was emitting from the stables of a Passail farm. When the owner’s son and a neighbor were able to alert the fire brigade, the attic of the building was already on fire. Before emergency services arrived, five goats were freed from the burning barn and a tractor was taken to safety.
Not all animals saved
Many other animals (cows and chickens) were already outside the barn at that time and were therefore not harmed. However, it was too late for some twenty bantam and quail chicks. They perished in the flames.
A total of eight fire brigades with a total of one hundred Florianis and 17 vehicles responded to the major fire. It took about four hours for all the flames to be extinguished.
Damage amount still unclear
No one was injured in the fire. In addition to the dead chicks, the farmer also lost stored hay, a hay blower, a hay crane and a car in the flames. The extent of the material damage is not yet clear. The cause of the fire is also currently being investigated.
