There is a lot of excitement in Deutsch-Wagram in Lower Austria: Two giant trees near the train station were cut down for a residential building. “A mistake”, as they say…
Until Wednesday, the Bahnhofsstrasse in Deutsch-Wagram in the Gänserndorf district was literally in the shade of two large trees. Now the ancient giants are history. Gladly. Unintentionally, as the owner of the property indicates. But first things first.
Even an issue in the city council
When it became known that Raiffeisen-Wohnbau wanted to build 22 apartments on the site, alarm bells went off in the town hall. The tenor was that the two trees should certainly be preserved. There was even a corresponding decision of the city council. But since it is private property, it was dependent on the good will of the owner. It just wasn’t good enough.
“They apologized several times”
“Raiffeisen forgot to tell the construction company to keep the trees. We apologized several times for this,” said Ulrike Mühl-Hittinger, mayor of the ÖVP. Now 200 trees are being planted on the city’s arable land as a replacement. This is also recorded in the current building permit. “Of course there will be replacement plants”, confirms the contractor.
“Takes Decades”
Not everyone is happy about this: “The loss of oxygen through the gigantic trees cannot be compensated for decades,” says Environmental Council Heinz Bogner (Groenen).
