21 push-ups, 15 minutes of swimming, three kilometers of running in less than 15 minutes and 15 seconds and spelling – the police are increasingly failing the admission test. Even prolonged stress fades the shine of the uniform…
Our police officers are the only ones in Austria – but the demands and burdens on the friend and helper are increasing. The offspring, on the other hand, less and less. Pandemic, corona denier demos and asylum rush are added to the daily bread of police work such as traffic checks, dispute resolution, arrests and the like.
The magic of the outfit wears off with constant use. Although about 31,000 men and women are currently employed, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, another 1,000 Austrians will be admitted to the police profession this year. Lateral entrants are also welcome, there are no age limits – good character and citizenship are required.
where is the problem
“We want the best of the best, but there is currently a lack of suitable candidates in Austria,” complains Hermann Greylinger of police union FSG. And further: “There is often a problem with German spelling and physical fitness.” In the recent past, more and more applicants failed in the admission process.
In addition, according to the trade unionist, the attractiveness of the job is not (any longer) due to a lot of overtime and incompatibility with family life.
“A job that is more varied and fulfilling than almost any other awaits you. Helping, protecting, investigating and representing the law are diverse tasks, just like the police profession itself,” emphasizes Patrick Maierhofer, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior. In contrast, the earning potential is already high during the training around 1800 euros gross per month. A gross income of EUR 3900 is possible after the basic training. In addition, the manager profiles himself as a modern employer with more than 100 professions and special training.
