According to a survey, nearly one in four people (23 per cent) in Britain never want to turn on their heating in winter because of skyrocketing electricity and gas prices. For people with minor children, the number is even higher: 27 percent. Most people (about 70 percent) want to turn up their heating less often.
About one in ten (11 percent) are considering taking out a loan. Here too, the proportion is higher among people with younger children (17 percent), according to research by market research institute Savanta ComRes.
“Heartbreaking Decisions”
The Liberal Democrat party warned that families would be forced to make “heartbreaking decisions”. The country is “on the brink of its worst cost of living crisis in a century”. “It is a national scandal that parents have to choose between heating their homes and feeding their children,” said party expert Christine Jardine. The Liberal Democrats, like the main opposition Labor party, are demanding that the Conservative government freeze price increases.
Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Sunday that the new government, expected to take office on September 6, will introduce far-reaching additional aid for consumers. But he did not give details. According to experts, the government measures taken so far are far from sufficient.
The survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted before the regulatory agency OFGEM raised the cap on basic energy rates by 80 percent on Friday. Analysts expect the values to be even clearer now.
