On Monday, a sudden fire broke out on a ferry in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Sweden. According to the Swedish Maritime Authority, there are 300 people on board the Stena Line.
The fire was reported at 12:40 p.m. The ferry operates between Nynäshamn in Sweden and Ventspils in Latvia. “We have no reports of personal injuries,” Stena Line spokesman Stefan Efström told Swedish TV channel SVT. Although there was smoke, there were “no open flames,” Mjörning said.
A spokeswoman for the marine rescue center told TT news agency there were no reports of injuries. The fire is under control. There is currently no reason to evacuate the ferry.
“But we have warned all available units to be on the scene if an evacuation should be necessary,” it said. All available pilot boats and helicopters were sent to the ferry. The ferry would be near the small Swedish island of Gotska Sandön. The fire is said to have started in a refrigerated container on the car deck.
