South Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Kovalyov defected after the invasion by Russia began – now the politician has been found dead in his home. The 33-year-old’s partner was also killed. She was the victim of a knife attack and died in a hospital. Kovalyov had already been the target of an attack, but the deputy sheriff survived the attack with a car bomb.
Anyone who turns to the enemy in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories, of course, does not gain much popularity among his compatriots. In the south of the country, Kovalev had turned to Russia when they conquered the area. Before the invasion, the agrarian businessman was a member of the Servant of the People’s Party, which also includes President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In April, he was finally expelled from the party and the faction. The suspicion: cooperation with Moscow. The prosecutor’s office was investigating high treason.
Suspected murder weapon was registered on victim
Meanwhile, in his home region of Kherson, he served as deputy regional chief and minister of agriculture. He survived an explosives attack in June, but was eventually killed in the second, most recent attack. He was found with a bullet to the head at his home in the city of Hola Prystan. A firearm was also found at the scene that, according to Radio Free Europe, was registered in the victim’s name. According to media reports, his girlfriend was taken to hospital with a stab wound, where she died.
It is not the first time that Ukrainians serving with the occupation authorities have been attacked. The Moscow-appointed mayor of the city of Mykhaylivka, Ivan Sushko, is said to have been killed by a car bomb last week, according to the occupiers. In early August, the Moscow-appointed deputy mayor of the Ukrainian city of Nova Kakhovka was shot dead by an unknown assailant as he left his home. At the end of June, the head of the Youth Policy Directorate in the Kherson region administration, Dmytro Savluchenko, was killed in a car bomb.
