The driving license is in high demand: 167,032 driving licenses were issued in Austria last year, an increase of 18 percent from 2020. The category B driving license was most in demand, but Austrians seem to be particularly fond of heavy vehicles, especially women .
According to Statistics Austria, the C classes (trucks and truck trailers) recorded the highest growth with a plus of 35 percent. 10,963 driver’s licenses represent the highest value in the past 12 years. Particularly striking was the increasing share of women with a truck driving license, which also reached a peak in 2021. Every tenth C class (C and C1) was acquired by women in 2021 (594 out of 5,880).
Less interest in L17 in Vienna
Nevertheless, the lion’s share consisted of driving licenses B (91,973 persons and a plus of 20 percent compared to 2020). The regular B-class (from 18 years) increased by 22 percent to 61,112 documents, the L17 driving licenses by 15 percent to 30,861. The share of the L17 varied greatly depending on the state: in Burgenland more than half (54 percent) bought the B-Class in 2021, in Vienna it was only 11 percent.
All-time low for buses
The A classes (engines: A, A1, A2) also recorded an increase of 19 percent. With 23,108 driving licenses issued, the highest number in the past nine years was reached. The bus driving license fell by minus 18 percent to an all-time low: in 2021 only 1,072 driving licenses for the D-classes (buses and bus trailers) were issued.
