Driver reported – seriously injured: cyclists simply left behind

Date:

During a risky overtaking maneuver on Monday near Birkfeld (Styria) a cyclist was pushed off the road – the 70-year-old fell and was seriously injured. The driver who caused the accident was involved in a collision and did not report to the police until hours later.

At about 2:40 p.m., near Birkfeld on the L 104, the cyclist rode down the valley in the direction of the B 72. In a confusing bend, he was overtaken by a dark gray family bus (SUV).

At the same time, there was an oncoming vehicle, whereupon the SUV driver steered his car to the right again, pushing the cyclist off the road. This caused the cyclist to roll over and onto the road.

Stopped and drove on
The driver of the family bus stopped his vehicle and walked in the direction of the cyclist, but turned back unaided and drove off in the direction of the B 72.

The cyclist suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident and was admitted to the LKH Weiz as a patient.

A manhunt was underway for the fugitive driver. He turned himself in to the police a few hours after the accident. The 73-year-old from the Weiz district stated that he had not observed the incident in this form. He became aware of the accident through media reports and subsequently filed a report with the police.

The 73-year-old is reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Graz on suspicion of abandoning an injured person and to the Weiz district authority on suspicion of hit and run.
