Evacuations in Vienna – burst water pipe: construction crane threatens to become unstable

Date:

Large-scale operation early Wednesday in the Viennese district of Favoriten: A water main break in Patrubangasse would have far-reaching consequences. The immediate area had to be evacuated because a construction crane was in danger of becoming unstable and falling over!

The burst pipe had created a cavity in the ground in the immediate vicinity of the construction crane. “The size of this cavity is unclear. Because it is close to a 45-meter high construction crane, the stability of the crane is threatened,” the spokesman for the Vienna Fire Brigade, Jürgen Figerl, told krone.at.

Because of this threat situation, according to Figerl, it has been decided to evacuate the danger zone – and therefore also numerous apartments – as a precaution. In total, there were five multi-party houses. The fire station was on the scene with ten vehicles and 45 emergency services.

Three people treated by rescue
The Vienna professional rescue service was also on site with the special operations group and several rescue teams were also deployed. Three people should have been taken care of, spokesman Andreas Huber told krone.at. “A lady had to be taken to hospital because of an existing illness,” he explained. He described the situation on the ground as “wait and see”, and there was never any unrest or even panic.

Crane is disassembled
“Currently there are no signs that the tower crane has become unstable,” he continued. It has now also been decided how to proceed. “In order to avert the danger, it has now been decided that the crane will be dismantled.” However, the duration of the operation cannot be estimated precisely for the time being.
