Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba asks NATO for more weapons

Date:

Faced with the “potential escalation of the conflict”, NATO has opened up to help Ukrainian authorities with the heavy equipment demanded by Kiev. Borrell adds that Ukraine needs “less applause and more weapons.”

In the second phase of the Russian offensive on Ukraine, the solution, according to Ukraine, NATO and the European Union, is to send more lethal weapons to Kiev, “given the possible escalation of the war in the east of the country and the option to stretch in time.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dimitro Kulebahas been clear about it: “My agenda is very simple, there are only three items on it: weapons, weapons and weapons”, and has asked NATO, weapons to “repel the Russian military offensive and new mass killings of civilians like those of Bucha”.

The Ukrainian minister has stated that Kiev needs heavy equipment, both “aircraft” and “short-range missiles, armored vehicles and heavy defense systems”. That is, according to Kuleba, “the best way” to help Ukraine.

These statements come at a time when NATO opens up for the first time to help Ukrainian authorities with this kind of material, which can encourage Member States to strengthen their missions and respond to Ukraine’s demands. Speaking yesterday before the first meeting of allied foreign ministers, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that Kiev urgently needs more military support and opened the door wide to send heavy equipment.

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign and Security Policy, Joseph Borrellurged on Thursday that Ukraine needs “more weapons, less applause and more weapons” and has chosen to continue to pressure Russia with more sanctions, including against its oil, and international isolation.

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, has assured that, regarding the Spanish state, “the possibility of sending tanks, aircraft and heavy weapons to Ukraine to defend itself against Russia is currently not on the table”. Albares has assured that “Spain is already helping with military equipment, with humanitarian aid, with sanctions, with political support” and reiterated that it is not NATO that directly sends the weapons, but the allied countries individually

Since the beginning of the Russian military operation and in the preceding weeks, Ukraine has received weapons (light and heavy) from numerous countries in the Northern Hemisphere, including some twenty countries of the European Union (Czech Republic, Poland, France, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Croatia, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Spain), as well as the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Turkey or United Arab Emirates.
