The relevant amendment to the Raserpaket Act will be in effect for one year. The Road Safety Supervisory Board (KFV) is now calling for further measures to prevent accidents. Excessive speeds remain one of the main causes of fatal and serious injuries in Austria.

From 2017 to 2021, one in four fatalities would be due to inappropriate speeding, it said Wednesday. One measure is to lower the limit for driving license withdrawal.

Adjustment to 30 km/h in the area
One measure is to lower the limit for driving license withdrawal. The KFV demanded an adjustment of 30 km/h in built-up areas and to 40 km/h on country roads and highways. In addition, the withdrawal period of the driving license must be extended to at least three months if the speed is higher than 40 km/h in built-up areas or more than 50 km/h on open roads and highways.

Introduction of a national administrative criminal record
Furthermore, exceeding the speed limit below the driving license withdrawal threshold must lead to a reservation, and a second reservation must result in the license being revoked. In addition, the introduction of a nationwide administrative criminal record to be able to identify repeat offenders more quickly, in accordance with the requirements of the KFV.
