Fraud in the name of the Treasury: A new cyber-gang scam is causing a stir. In Burgenland, a fake text message from the tax authorities is now circulating for the first time. Hundreds of recipients received the treacherous message, including police officers.
Significantly more spending when shopping in supermarkets, much higher bills for electricity, gas and fuel, hugely increased rates for insurance companies, inflation adjustments for account costs, etc. – the wave of inflation is spreading across all sectors. An unexpected payback comes at just the right time.

“You will still receive an amount of 286.93 euros. If you click to confirm that the message has arrived, you will receive the money,” a supposed information letter from the Ministry of Finance promises a welcome addition to your very personal budget.
But appearances are deceiving. Internet fraudsters hide behind the supposed good news, which is sent by text message or email. Anyone who clicks on the link will end up on a false FinanzOnline website. “It’s about data theft,” warns the federal police.
“Please just ignore!”
The fake refund requests have now appeared in Burgenland for the first time. Even police officers were confronted with the treacherous reports. “Please just ignore it! The Tax and Customs Administration does not send text messages,” is the simple advice of the detectives.
