Unbelievable scenes took place on the Silvretta High Alpine Road in Vorarlberg last night. Despite a strict trucking ban, a 60-year-old driver was driving his truck and trailer on the mountain road with 34 hairpin bends when his vehicle suddenly caught fire.
On Wednesday around 9.20 pm, despite a strict driving ban, a 60-year-old man drove his truck in the area of Partenen on the Silvretta High Alpine Road in the direction of Bielerhöhe. According to police, the truck driver was en route from Romania to Italy and his navigation system had guided him to the route.
Probably burst oil pipe
When the 60-year-old noticed strange noises from the engine compartment between turns 7 and 8, he wanted to steer his vehicle on an unpaved terrain. Even before he reached this spot, he heard a bang from the engine compartment. Presumably due to a burst oil line, a fire broke out in the engine compartment, which quickly spread to the driver’s cab and eventually to the entire truck.
Difficult extinguishing work
Another road user who noticed the incident notified emergency services. The fire brigade of the municipalities of Partenen and Gaschurn and the company fire brigade of the Vorarlberger Illwerke were on duty. The load – cardboard boxes stacked closely together – made the extinguishing work difficult and, above all, lengthy. According to the Gaschurn fire brigade, the operation could not be ended until around 3 a.m.
Driver was unharmed
The Silvretta Hochalpenstrae route service and a local transport company supported the emergency services in the rescue and clean-up work. Fortunately, the driver of the truck escaped unscathed.
