The AUA mother Lufthansa is canceling almost her entire program because of Friday’s pilot strike. In Austria, a total of four flights at Vienna airport to and from France are cancelled.
“At the Vienna site, the effects are limited,” an airport spokesperson said on Thursday. According to the current status, flights from Vienna to Munich can operate as scheduled on Friday. Vienna Airport has no information about possible flight cancellations on weekends.
AUA wants to increase capacity
The airport advises travelers to check their airline’s website for current flight status. While the Lufthansa pilot strike would not affect AUA, the airline is trying to increase its capacity to make up for the shortcomings, the company said on Thursday.
The all-day strike is especially impacting some German federal states where the school holidays are coming to an end. However, Eurowings and Eurowings Discover are scheduled to fly, and the same is true for Lufthansa flights from non-German take-off points, provided the aircraft and personnel are already abroad.
As reported, the salary negotiations, which the union believes have failed, are the official reason. The union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) had demanded wage increases of 5.5 percent this year and an automatic compensation above inflation from 2023. In addition, more money must be made available for, among other things, training.
Lufthansa: “We made a socially balanced offer”
Within two years, that would be an extra charge of 900 million euros, according to Lufthansa. The company recently offered to increase the base salary by 900 euros per month. “We have absolutely no understanding of the VC’s call for a strike. Despite the ongoing impact of the coronavirus crisis and the uncertain outlook for the global economy, employers have made a very good and socially balanced offer,” said Michael Niggemann, HR director at Lufthansa, calling on the union to return to the negotiating table.
