The chinese army started today “important” military exercises with live fire about Taiwanexercises that will last until Sunday and which, according to the island’s defense ministry, equate to a “sea and air blockade” on Taiwan.
The maneuvers, which begin a day after the controversial visit to Taipei by Nancy Pelosi, the president of the US legislature, include the closure of sea and airspace in six zones around the island, one of them about 20 kilometers off the coast of Kaohsiung, the main city in southern Taiwan.
Yesterday Taiwan registered the entry of 27 Chinese military aircraft in his self-defined Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), against which his army activated a combat air patrol, issued radio alerts and deployed missile defense systems to guard Chinese aircraft.
In addition, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense reported today that Taiwanese troops had to: shoot flares drove off twice last night chinese military drone which flew over the vicinity of the Kinmen Islands (aka Quemoy), which, although only 30 kilometers from the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen, are controlled by Taipei.
In recent decades, these islands have been the target of bombing by China as tensions between Taipei and Beijing reached their highest levels.
According to Taiwanese media, the Chinese exercises have hit 18 international air routes on the island and more than 900 flights have been forced to reroute.
At the same time, according to Chinese state media, American RC-135S Reconnaissance Aircraft left the Japanese island of Okinawa, just over 600 kilometers from Taiwan, toward the island. In contrast, the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier departed Taiwan and headed northeast toward Japan, also according to Chinese media.
China, which has described Pelosi’s visit as a “farce” and “deplorable betrayal”, claims sovereignty over the island and considers Taiwan a rebellious province since the Kuomintang nationalists withdrew there in 1949, after ending the civil war against China and the communists lost.
