During a walk in the Carinthian Mallnitz in the Hohe Tauern, a Lower Austrian (41) fell into acute mountain distress and threatened to fall. The holidaymaker warned his landlord just in time…
The 41-year-old wanted to take a high-alpine hike around 12:00 on Wednesday from the Gößkarspeicher parking lot via the Gießener Hütte and the Mallnitzer Scharte to the pier deck that is more than 3000 meters high. On the way back, the holidaymaker lost sight of the marked path.
“Can’t hold me long!”
“He tried to descend through unpaved boulders on a direct route to the Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus. In doing so, he came upon exposed rocky terrain in the area of the sea wall, above the Dösener See,” said a police officer. The Lower Austrian was unable to get any further or back, so he informed the innkeeper of the Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus about his condition about 7:50 p.m. and stated that he could not hold it. out much longer.
With the help of the Libelle Carinthia police helicopter, the walker was quickly located, but the rescue was difficult. “The 41-year-old was in imminent danger of falling into his position, so the rescue had to be carried out with great care,” said an official. At around 9:30 p.m., emergency services finally managed to rescue the holidaymaker unharmed but exhausted by means of a rescue rope and fly him to the Arthur von Schmid home.
The Mallnitz mountain rescue service was also on standby, the Obervellach police, the Spittal an der Drau Alpine police and the Klagenfurt escape police.
