A masked man armed with a knife entered a kindergarten in China’s Jiangxi province on Wednesday and attacked the children and caregivers present. Three people died and several others were injured. After an alarm search by more than 1,000 police officers, the alleged gunman was caught.
The 48-year-old was arrested on a country road, Zhongguo Yinwen Zhoukan magazine reported Thursday. State television quoted a mother whose three-year-old child suffered cuts. A tendon had been cut. “The child is so afraid that it always says that it does not want to go to the hospital, but wants to go home.” The kindergarten was on the third floor of a shopping center — with lockable doors, the mother reported. It was not clear how the assailant got in. At the time of the attack, more than 20 children and four or five teachers were in the kindergarten. Among the victims were teachers and children.
Strict safety measures in kindergartens
Such attacks on preschoolers or students are not uncommon in China. In previous crimes, perpetrators wanted revenge for perceived injustices in society and often sought the weakest members to do so. That is why there have long been strict security measures in schools and kindergartens in China.
There are also guards at the entrances. In most cases, parents, relatives or other people are not allowed on the school or kindergarten grounds. You can only drop off your children at the entrance and pick them up there.
