Analysis of the Sylt video – “Right-wing extremism is also a problem for higher classes”

Date:

The racist slogans in the Sylt video are said to show a normalization of right-wing extremist content. The German social psychologist Pia Lamberty has now analyzed this. “Without any form of contradiction, social norms are simply violated.”

“People can express extreme slogans in public without fear,” said the co-director of the Center for Monitoring, Analysis and Strategy (Cemas), which researches radicalization and conspiracies on the internet. The song “L’amour Toujours” (in German: “Always Love”) is now increasingly associated with racist slogans. “That also does something in the brain.”

Exercising power
The social psychologist Lamberty pointed out that right-wing extremism was not only a problem in East Germany “or among people with lower incomes, but also among higher classes.” Racism also comes from people who have studied or hold management positions. This is about exercising structural power. Structural means that it is neither an individual nor a situational problem.

Spread on social media
According to Lamberty, those affected can avoid places where racist comments are made unchallenged. As reported, the racist incident at a chic bar on the German island of Sylt sparked outrage (see video above). In a short video circulated on social media, young people shout “Foreigners out” and “Germany for the Germans” to the party hit “L’amour Toujours” by Gigi D’Agostino.
