Car sales slow down in August despite inflation

Date:

Registrations up 9% to nearly 52,000 units, with electric cars driving purchases

Nearly 51,907 passenger cars were registered in August, 9.1% more than last year, according to data from Anfac, Faconauto and Ganvam. But this good data cannot offset the bad year that weighed heavily on the industry, with sales falling 9.4% since January to just 533,000 units sold.

The numbers were favorable thanks to good sales evolution for companies, with sales up 23%, as the individual channel declined by 4.3%. For private individuals, the decline has been 1.4% so far this year, while companies bought 4% more cars.

“The increase in monthly sales can be misleading,” said Félix García, Anfac’s Director of Communications and Marketing, indicating that when the figures are compared to 2019, the decrease is greater than 30% despite the data for August. In addition, the market contraction over the year is 40% compared to 2019, emphasizes García, which affected the microchip crisis exacerbated by the complex international scenario, in addition to rising inflation.

The most sold in August were petrol models, accounting for 43% of total sales, compared to 17% for diesel and 39% for other technologies, such as electric.

For example, the high fuel prices encourage many Spaniards to bet on the purchase of an electric car instead of a traditional one. August data reflects this: Sales of electrified vehicles (including pure electric and plug-in hybrids) grew 14.7% to nearly 6,000 units in one month, according to data from Ganvam and Aedive.

This year, sales of this type of car have so far increased by 31% to 62,600 units. Of the total passenger car registrations in August, 8.1% were electrified models, according to data from both associations.

As for the 100% electric models, sales were 29% more than last year in August, with almost 3,000 units, of which 1,473 were passenger cars, 13% more. This year, 32,000 of these vehicles have already been sold this year, 46% more than in 2021. The vehicle that grew the most compared to last year is vans, which increased by 90% in August to 2,155 registered units in this year. year.

Plug-in hybrids remain a very positive solution for drivers who do not have the opportunity to charge their vehicle every day. They recorded a 3% increase in August to 2,780 units, almost all passenger cars.
