Starting next month, Twitter will only allow its paying subscribers to use text messages as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method to secure their accounts. After March 20, this is only possible for Twitter Blue subscribers, the company announced on Friday.
Tesla and Twitter owner Elon Musk responded with “Yup” to a user’s tweet. The company is changing its policy “because telecom companies have been using robot accounts to pump 2FA SMS” and it is losing $60 million a year “on fraudulent SMS”.
Two-factor authentication is designed to make accounts more secure. In addition to the password, the account holder must use a second authentication method, for example on his smartphone. Twitter allows 2FA via SMS, authenticator app and security key.
