The new school year is just around the corner for thousands of students. To ensure they reach their destination safely, the Vienna Police will step up speed limits in the school environment in the coming weeks and months. Every year, an average of 3,800 school-age children between the ages of six and fifteen are involved in an accident on Austrian roads.
About 470 of them died on their way to or from school – that’s the equivalent of about 22 school classes per year. Excessive speed is an important risk factor for accidents on the way to school. Traffic accident statistics show that inappropriate speed is among the top 5 leading causes of accidents. Almost four in ten drivers (38.4 percent) exceed the 50 km/h limit in built-up areas and three in four drivers (75.5 percent) ignore 30 km/h zones.
“Action sharp” is to keep a closer eye on school routes
The ‘Action Sharp’ of the Road Safety Supervision Board (KFV) supports the efforts of civil servants by raising awareness. “Safety on the way to school is a top priority in our police work. That is why we have been deploying police officers at the beginning of the school for years to better guard the way to and from school. In this school year, the Vienna State Traffic Service will monitor traffic all year round for the first time. This measure has been shown to make an important contribution to security,” said Vice President of State Police Michael Lepuschitz.
Real Heroes Boost Slow Campaign
The Vienna police will be more visible around schools in Vienna and will, among other things, carry out speed checks. This is intended to sensitize motorists and ensure the safety of school children. These measures are accompanied by the “True Heroes Drive Slowly” campaign. The KFV’s campaign aims to remind motorists to pay more attention to speed than usual in the school environment and to drive carefully and be ready to brake.
