Mayor Herbert Schober is desperate. He will have to pay around 370,000 euros for the retirement home in Grödig in Salzburg next year.
From 1 January, the municipality of Grödig will have to deal with high additional costs. The reason is the ever increasing price of electricity. This is especially noticeable in the retirement home. Because instead of the previous eleven cents, almost 83 cents per kilowatt hour will have to be paid from January, according to the offer from Salzburg AG.
The background: Grödig needs a new electricity contract around the turn of the year. At Salzburg AG, all electricity consumers with more than 100,000 kilowatt hours per year are considered major customers – and they are subject to completely different criteria than the average household customer.
Unlike private customers, all contracts are time-limited. According to the company, they last between one and three years. The problem: With a new contract for large customers, the current market price must be offered. And this moment is astronomically high.
Price will fall slightly in the following years
“We can’t do it just for our retirement home,” says Schober. There are 82 rooms in Grödig retirement home. The annual consumption of the entire system is around 450,000 kilowatt hours – at a price of 83 cents, this amounts to approximately 370,000 euros. “With the additional costs alone, we could hire eight employees in the retirement home,” the local manager calculates. He also calls on the state of Salzburg for help.
Senior home gets large photovoltaic system
The price will drop to just under 46 cents in 2024 and to 27 cents in 2025 in subsequent years. This means that there is still a considerable additional burden compared to previous years. Bitter: The municipality has already ordered a large PV installation for the retirement home.
There is no comparable situation as with the large private customers. As reported, the electricity price can be maintained this year as the required quantities have already been ordered and paid for in 2023, according to Salzburg AG.
