Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant – Reactor back on the grid after shelling

Date:

After the bombing of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, a reactor is now connected to the grid again. Block five is being brought to full capacity, Ukrainian operator Enerhoatom said on Friday. Meanwhile, the Russian side announced that two IAEA inspectors would remain permanently at the nuclear power plant.

As reported, an emergency shutdown was initiated on Thursday due to mortar fire. Now one of the two reactors still in operation has gone back online. Europe’s largest nuclear power plant (NPP) has come under repeated fire in recent weeks, with the Ukrainian and Russian sides blaming each other. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu accused the Ukrainian military on Friday of risking a nuclear disaster in Europe.

weapons on site
Kiev has said the same thing in the past, accusing the Russian army of stockpiling weapons at the Zaporizhzhya factory. “I declare responsible that we have no heavy weapons on the nuclear plant site or in the adjacent areas,” Shoigu replied. He hopes that the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can convince themselves of this.

Can Mission resolve incidents?
As reported, a team began inspecting the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant on Thursday. This includes checking the condition of the factory and the working conditions of the Ukrainian workforce. Five IAEA members were still on site on Thursday, two remain permanently at the nuclear power plant, according to Russian information.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already expressed his disappointment with the previous inspection. For example, the IAEA did not clearly demand the “demilitarization” of the nuclear site, although Zelenskyy spoke to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi about it on Tuesday. Ukrainian state-owned company Enerhoatom even doubted the mission could clarify the current situation at the power plant. “The occupiers are lying, falsifying facts and evidence,” the company criticized on Telegram on Friday.

The delegation has already been denied access to the crisis center, where Russian soldiers are stationed. The Russian side would do everything it could to ensure that no facts about the nuclear power plant were disclosed.

Fight in Enerhodar
According to the British Ministry of Defense, there is heavy fighting in southern Ukraine, including in the Enerhodar district, where the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is located. A residential building would have come under fire, among other things. In this case, too, it was not possible to determine who had fired.
