Confession made – messenger stole 800 packages: loot sold on the internet

Date:

Due to the corona pandemic, the parcel volume at the Austrian Post and other delivery companies has increased enormously in recent years. The package thieves also abused this. A 45-year-old parcel deliverer from the Upper Austrian district of Grieskirchen is said to have stolen 800 parcels and sold some of the loot on the internet.

According to a report by Swiss Post’s own investigative service, in January 2022, a 45-year-old Austrian who worked as a parcel deliverer in the Grieskirchen district was linked to parcel theft. The lengthy further investigation revealed the true scope of his activities. During a search and investigation by the theft group of the State Criminal Investigation Service of Upper Austria, several hundred seized packages could be assigned to a large-scale series of thefts between March 2020 and January 2022.

The suspect had mainly concentrated on return goods, as in most cases the companies had already paid compensation or money back and the goods were therefore no longer invoiced to the customer. In some cases he appropriated his own returned goods, ie orders that he had carried out himself and then returned.

Stolen goods sold on the internet
According to current knowledge, it can be assumed that approximately 800 packages containing items with a value in the order of six figures have been stolen and sold or offered for sale by the suspect in various ways, including on internet platforms.

The goods ranged from televisions and coffee machines to clothing. By seizing 506 parcels, a significant amount of the damage was repaired and the goods transferred to the companies that suffered damage. The suspect confessed.
