Woman had crashed – abandoned backpack led to injured hiker

Date:

Her abandoned backpack on top of the Freienstein near Gröbming in Styria may have saved a hiker’s life on Friday. The 49-year-old went on a mountain trek alone around noon, but when she reached the top, her drinking bottle slipped from her hand. When she tried to pick him up again, she fell 50 meters down a steep gully. Another hiker found the backpack of the injured and started the rescue.

The 49-year-old from the Liezen district was stopped by a tree after a fall, but was unable to return to the 1,297-meter-high top. She had suffered spinal injuries and polytrauma, it turned out later.

The other hiker found the abandoned backpack in the summit area and a cell phone inside. Apparently she called the last numbers dialed and reached a relative of the owner of the cell phone. She told him that she had found the backpack, but that there was no trace of its owner.

Rescued by helicopter
Next of kin then went looking for the 49-year-old and also called in the Gröbming Mountain Rescue Service and the Alpine Police. Around 7 p.m., a relative finally discovered her lying in the trench. Since boarding was not possible, she was rescued from the steep terrain with a rope by the crew of the ÖAMTC C14 rescue helicopter and flown to a hospital in Salzburg.
