“Great Tragedy” – Kremlin confirms “significant losses” for the first time

Date:

While the Ukrainian military boasts of military successes since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression and mentions the high number of Russian casualties, Moscow has been extremely cautious thus far. Now Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has for the first time acknowledged “significant losses” by Russian forces in Ukraine.

This is “a great tragedy for us,” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman told Sky News on Thursday. He didn’t mention any numbers. Most recently, Russia had spoken of 1,351 fallen soldiers. Ukraine claims that more than ten times as many Russian soldiers have been killed.

withdraw a sign of “good will”
The Kremlin spokesman also claimed that Russian troops had withdrawn from Ukraine’s Kiev and Chernihiv regions to show “good will” during the negotiations. Regarding Mariupol, Peskov said the disputed port city in southeastern Ukraine is part of the “People’s Republics” recognized by Moscow.

No confession of war crimes
“Mariupol will be liberated by nationalist battalions, hopefully sooner or later,” Peskov said. The Kremlin spokesman called alleged war crimes committed by Russians in Mariupol, such as the attack on a maternity hospital, but also in the Kiev suburb of Bucha “fake”. Despite eyewitness accounts and satellite images, Russia insists it has nothing to do with the murder of hundreds in Bucha.

“Everything must be carefully examined,” Peskow said. Before doing so, however, the design of this international inquiry should be clarified. There have been many cases lately in which Russia was not involved. Peskov stressed that Ukrainian nationalists have committed brutal crimes against the civilian population. There are eyewitnesses to that.
