Beijing regime demands Washington rescind sale and threatens ‘countermeasures’
Amid mounting tensions with China, the US government has taken a new turn by announcing a $1.1 billion weapons package for Taiwan. Xi Jinping’s regime has already threatened “countermeasures” in response, without specifying which ones. Washington’s decision comes a month after Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi outraged Pelosi over a visit to the island that sparked the biggest military maneuvers in the Asian giant’s history.
The US announcement also came a day after Taiwanese forces shot down an unidentified commercial drone amid a sudden series of mysterious raids that have left the island confused after a display of power from Beijing, which it said fired missiles over Taipei, the capital.
The new package, to be approved by Congress, includes $665 million for an early-warning radar system to help Taiwan track incoming missiles, the State Department said. The island will also allocate $355 million to buy 60 Harpoon Block missiles, which are capable of tracking and sinking ships if China were to launch a naval attack. The shipment also includes $85.6 million to acquire more than 100 Sidewinder missiles, emblematic in Western militaries for their air-to-air firepower.
Beijing, which considers Taiwan an “inalienable” part of its territory, urged Washington to “withdraw the sale immediately” because it “is sending the wrong signals to separatist forces,” said Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese embassy in the U.S. will take legitimate and necessary countermeasures in light of the evolution of the situation,” he warned.
