m Ennstal. This year’s stay ended with a shock: the 75-year-old’s kneecap broke during a slip. As painful as the incident was, Ivankovics is enthusiastic about the hospital staff in Schladming.
A day before the end of his holiday, the Burgenlander visited the Eschachalm in the Schladminger Tauern. The tour came to an abrupt end: he slipped and hit his knee on a stone. A quarter-inch piece broke off the kneecap, causing a deep tear in the tissue above the joint, and “the bursa was also injured,” Ivankovics says.
“I thought I had to jump out of the window”
The pain was correspondingly great, even after the first treatment in the emergency room of DKH Schladming: “I thought I had to jump out of the window,” is how the 75-year-old describes his torment in drastic terms. It lasted two days, but during this time he also grew fond of the hospital staff. So he turned to the “Krone” to express his gratitude.
The staff were “extremely friendly and helpful” – “from reception to cleaning staff”. It didn’t feel like a hospital, but ‘like a family’.
Slowly learn to walk again – and go back to the mountains next year
By the way, the painful experience could not curb the mountain veteran’s urge to wander: next summer he wants to spend a few days in the region again, as he has been doing for more than 40 years. “It’s just an area we’ve always been drawn to. I’m sure I’ll do something again next year!”
